Hollywood continues its search for the next “Harry Potter.” “Percy Jackson and the Olympians” hasn’t yet proven itself as a worthy successor. So perhaps it will be “Incarceron,” Catherine Fisher’s young adult series which recently debuted in the U.S. and immediately became a best seller? Fox 2000 certainly hopes so after beating out at least two other studios for the rights to adapt the books into a family film franchise. “Incarceron” tells the story of 17-year-old Finn, a boy born into an expansive nightmarish prison society in some kind of dystopian future in which computers control the appearance of the real world to look like it’s the 17th century. Determined to escape into that outer world (called Sapphique), Finn partners with Claudia, the daughter of Incarceron’s Warden, and the two find a mysterious crystal key that could help them out. I haven’t read the book, so all that sounds pretty crazy, and intriguing. Whether a film version may be like a kids’ “Matrix” or another difficult sell like “City of Ember” remains to be seen, however.
